Assessment and Evaluation: How does it work?

Many of us are familiar with the assessment and evaluation terms. Mostly, we pretend to use the terms interchangeably. Unfortunately, in reality, the terms refer to different processes.
Literally, assessment and evaluation are two kinds of different things. As stated on the American University website, Thomas Angelo (1995) point out that "Assessment is an ongoing process aimed at understanding and improving student learning. It involves making our expectations explicit and public; setting appropriate criteria and high standards for learning quality; systematically gathering, analyzing, and interpreting evidence to determine how well performance matches those expectations and standards; and using the resulting information to document, explain, and improve performance. When it is embedded effectively within larger institutional systems, assessment can help us focus our collective attention, examine our assumptions, and create a shared academic culture dedicated to assuring and improving the quality of higher education." *

And the evaluation itself is the last stage the way to measure the quality of the assessment.

Then, how either assessment or evaluation work in education sectors, especially in instructional design, and how important?

As an instructional designer, we aim to create instructions that can support teaching and learning activities to become more meaningfully. Both designer and teacher are finding what the student already know and do not know, and also stipulate what are the way to fill the gap and expand student knowledge.  In order to respond to that, therefore, "educator and administrator understand that assessing student and evaluating the result must be ongoing and frequent." (St. Thomas University. 2019)***

In KEMPS instructional design, evaluation and assessment become the last component. Here, formative and summative evaluation are more compatible rather than other kinds of evaluations. It is because to ensure that the other core element of KEMPS is to work appropriately and meet the designers' expectations. I found that it is as similar to the last step in the design thinking process that is tested.
